Thank You for One Great Big Mother

A Mother’s day card:

Dear Mother Earth,

I’m sorry for all the things I did when I was a kid. You know, things that hurt your feelings, or made you worry about whether I was ever going to grow up.

I know I have not been the child you always hoped for, but I am going to try harder.

Today is Mother’s Day and I just thought I would let you know that I noticed all those little things you have done for me and my siblings.

I know you think we don’t appreciate you because we keep doing things that hurt you.

You’re probably sorry you ever gave us that chemistry set for Christmas, huh?

We are a rowdy bunch, always messing up your clean floor, or running though the place like crazy barbarians, tipping over your plants and breaking your good “China”.

You have tried to teach us to live better.

You even gave us wonderful pets and animals to take care of so we could learn responsibility—we kind of messed that up a bit, too.

Remember the time we had to flush all those fish down the toilette?

You told us that putting trash in their water would kill them, but we did it anyway.

Kids will be kids, right?

You have worked so hard to raise us right.

You have shown us beauty.

You have made amazing food for us—we should share more, I know, but Monsanto makes it so hard.

You have never taken a day off work, never stopped turning, so that our lives could be better.

I know you probably feel like we are just a crew of ungrateful children that never learned a thing.

I know Saturn is always bragging about how her sons grew up to be successful, and bought that giant ring for her.

I know Venus is always calling you on the phone, comparing her beautiful daughters to us slovenly heathens.

But you never gave up on us and you loved us in spite of our unruly ways.

I got you this card for Mother’s Day to let you know that I love you.

I was going to get you a nice bottle of expensive sunscreen but the bullies on the financial playground took all my allowance to bail their friends out of jail.

Anyway I hope you like this card. I made it myself. (Remember that old tree in the back yard? Yeah, well …I …um… again, I hope you like this card.)

Happy Mother’s Day!

Love, just one of your children, Lea Kelley

  1. What a lovely card to our Mother Earth. 🙂 I enjoyed the video too. Thank you.

I like the “Stupid kids” tag.

  2. Very nice indeed. I think we all owe a big thanks. Talk about one mother who never gets to rest.

  3. A well deserved Mother’s Day card lest we forget we all have a living mother who cares for our most basic needs. Thanks for reminding us.

  4. Ah, how often we forget to thank the mother of us all. Thank you for remembering her, for thanking her for our many gifts on our behalf. Earth Mother is an entity without whom we would not know the Sun, the Moon, nor the Sky. Without them, how would we know our boundaries, how could we love our own frames of reference? Would we even recognize them? How can we forget her on any given day? We are selfish children, that’s how. We need people like you to call us home, to remind us from whence we came. YOU are a mother’s gift.
